Absolute Broadband Polarization Behaviour of PSR B0329+54: A Glimpse of the Core Emission Process

چکیده
In this paper we report multifrequency single pulse polarization observations of the PSR B0329+54 normal mode using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope at 325 and 610 MHz and the Effelsberg Observatory at 2695 MHz. Our observations show that towards the central part of the polarization position-angle traverse there is an unusual “arc”-like structure, which is comprised of a broadband “kink” and a frequencydependent “spot.” The features are intimately connected with the intensity dependence of the core component as well as being closely associated with the nearly complete negative circular polarization on its trailing edge. We find that the “kink” emission is associated with the extraordinary (X) propagation mode, and hence propagation effects do not appear capable of producing the core component’s broadband, intensity-dependent emission. Rather, the overall evidence points to a largely geometric interpretation in which the “kink” provides a rare glimpse of the accelerating cascade or height-dependent amplifier responsible for the core radiation.

Polarization Characteristics of Pulsar Profiles
Polarization profiles of several hundred pulsars have been published recently (eg. Gould & Lyne 1998, GL98; Weisberg et al. 1999). In this report, we summarize the characteristics of circular and high linear polarizations of pulsar profiles, based on all previously published data. Han et al. (1998) systematically studied the circular polarization of pulsar profiles. They found that circular pol...
متن کاملDetection of New Emission Components in Psr B0329+54
To study the structure of emission beam, we have analysed the single pulse data of PSR B0329+54 at 325 and 606 MHz. In order to unambiguously detect the weak emission components, we have developed a new data analysis technique, which we term “window–thresholding”. By applying this technique to the data, we have detected three new emission components, and also confirmed the presence of a compone...
متن کاملEllipticity and Deviations from Orthogonality in the Polarization Modes of PSR B0329+54
We report on an analysis of the polarization of single pulses of PSR B0329+54 at 328 MHz. We find that the distribution of polarization orientations in the central component diverges strongly from the standard picture of orthogonal polarization modes (OPMs), making a remarkable partial annulus on the Poincaré sphere. A second, tightly clustered region of density appears in the opposite hemisphe...
متن کاملSimultaneous single-pulse observations of radio pulsars
In this paper we demonstrate that a large, unexplored reservoir of information about pulsar emission exists, that is directly linked to the radiating particles and their radiation process: We present a study of flux density measurements of individual pulses simultaneously observed at four different frequencies. Correcting for effects caused by the interstellar medium, we derive intrinsic flux d...
متن کاملInfluence of Rotation on Pulsar Radiation Characteristics
We present a relativistic model for pulsar radio emission by including the effect of rotation on coherent curvature radiation by bunches. We find that rotation broadens the width of leading component compared to the width of trailing component. We estimate the component widths in the average pulse profiles of about 24 pulsars, and find that 19 of them have a broader leading component. We explai...
